Baby & Infant Swimming Lessons

Babies and infants, roughly 4 months to 3 years, with a parent in the water.

Baby swimming lessons are gentle, parent-in-the-water classes that help infants get comfortable and confident in the pool. The focus is water familiarisation, safe entries and exits, breath and float work, and turning the pool into a happy, calm place for your child.

What to expect from baby & infant lessons

  • A parent or carer in the water for the whole lesson.
  • Warm water, short sessions and lots of songs, games and repetition.
  • Early water-safety skills like reaching for the wall and floating on the back.
  • Small classes so every family gets attention from the teacher.

FAQ: Baby & Infant Swimming Lessons

What age can a baby start swimming lessons?
Many swim schools take babies from around four to six months, once their immunisations are underway and they can hold their head up. There is no single right age. The earlier sessions are about comfort and routine in the water rather than swimming on their own.
Do parents get in the water for baby swimming lessons?
Yes. For babies and young toddlers a parent or carer is in the water for the whole lesson, holding and guiding the child. It helps your baby feel secure and lets you learn the holds and cues to practise between classes.
How warm should the pool be for baby lessons?
Babies lose heat quickly, so dedicated baby programs use warmer water, often around 31 to 34°C, and keep sessions short. If a pool feels cold to you, it will feel colder to your baby.
