Saltwater vs Chlorine Pools for Swimming Lessons

Once you start touring swim schools, you will hear pools described as "chlorine" or "salt" as if it settles the question of which is better. It does not, not on its own. Both systems keep a pool clean and safe, and both are used successfully by excellent swim schools all over the country. What matters for your family is how each one feels for your particular child, and what trade-offs you are happy to live with over a term of lessons.

How each system actually works

A traditional chlorine pool has chlorine added directly, either as a liquid, granules or through a gas dosing system. It is the most common method worldwide because it is reliable, well understood and effective at killing bacteria and other nasties quickly.

A saltwater pool is not chlorine-free, which surprises a lot of parents when they first hear it.
