Swim School Water Quality Explained: What the Smell Really Means
Most of us judge a pool from the doorway, with our nose. A big chemical hit reads as clean. Barely any smell reads as suspicious. Both are back to front. The no-smell one is the worse mistake, because the pool doing the best job is the one you notice least.
The strong chlorine smell is mostly not chlorine
Chlorine is the disinfectant doing the work, and it has little smell of its own. What you smell in a pool hall is largely chloramines, the compounds that form when chlorine meets what swimmers bring in with them: sweat, sunscreen, skin cells, traces of urine. Those by-products lift off the surface and hang in the air.
A sharp, eye-watering smell is evidence of by-products, then, not of a generous dose of disinfectant. It points to a heavy load of that material, a plant working harder than it can keep up with, or air handling that is not clearing the surface. Counterintuitively, a strong smell can mean there is not enough active disinfectant to break those by-products down, not too much. A well-run indoor pool with good ventilation smells of very little, so if the first breath through the door is the strongest thing about a visit, ask about it.
What a pool operator is actually managing all day
Three things, mostly, and they pull on each other. First, how much active disinfectant is in the water, topped up continuously because swimmers use it up. Second, the water's balance, meaning how acidic or alkaline it is, which decides how well that disinfectant works and how the water feels on eyes and skin. Third, circulation and filtration, the whole pool pulled through filters and returned, over and over, all day.
Testing should happen through the day, not once in the morning, and more often when the pool is busy: back-to-back Saturday classes change the water faster than a quiet Tuesday. Results should be written down, and the record is the point: one reading says where the pool is, a run of them says where it is heading. The targets are set by regulation and vary by state and pool type, so there is no number to memorise.
Clarity tells you more than smell does
Clarity is the honest signal, and the one most people walk past. Stand at the edge and look down. The bottom should be clear and the tiles crisp at the deep end as well as the shallows. Haze or a milky cast suggests filtration is not keeping up or the chemistry has slipped, and it matters in the plainest safety terms: a lifeguard has to see a child on the bottom instantly.
If the water looks off, say so to the staff on duty rather than working it out yourself. They have the test kit and the authority to act, and a good centre would rather be told.
The air matters as much as the water
Learn-to-swim halls are deliberately warm and humid, because small bodies lose heat fast, as our guide to pool water temperature explains. That warmth makes the air harder to manage. By-products coming off the surface sit in the layer just above it, exactly where a child practising their breathing has their face. Ventilation is what shifts them.
So a stuffy hall where your eyes prickle in the viewing area before anyone has swum is telling you about air handling, not about over-chlorinated water. Where red eyes really come from
Red, stinging eyes get blamed on too much chlorine almost universally, and that is rarely the culprit. It is the same two things again: chloramines, and water that has drifted out of balance. Goggles help, but they treat the symptom; the fix belongs to the plant room. What families can do that genuinely helps
Chlorine is also not instant. The parasite behind cryptosporidiosis survives in correctly chlorinated water, which is why the exclusion after diarrhoea runs to two weeks and why the two protections that outlast even a perfect plant room are not swallowing the water and keeping sick children out of it. The habits below also cut what the chlorine has to react with: fewer by-products, less smell.
- Shower before you swim. The least glamorous habit in aquatics and the most useful. Thirty seconds takes off the sweat, sunscreen and skin cells that would otherwise become chloramines.

- Change and check swim nappies in the change room, never on the deck. A toilet stop before the lesson helps too.

What to ask, and what a good answer sounds like
You are not auditing anyone, just checking that the person answering knows their own operation. Ask how often the water is tested and who does it, whether readings are recorded, and how the air is managed. A good answer is specific and completely unbothered: a routine, a role, a frequency, maybe an offer to show you the log. A weak one is vague reassurance, or a hint that you are difficult for asking. A closed pool is often a good sign
Closing a pool is expensive and unpopular: lessons get rescheduled, staff field complaints. A centre that closes anyway after a nappy accident, or when a reading moves somewhere it should not be, is following its procedures and wearing the cost.

Closing costs a centre money and goodwill, so a school that shuts the pool after a nappy accident or an unexpected reading is following its procedures and putting swimmers first. Repeated unexplained closures are worth asking about, but a closure with a clear explanation is a sign of a well-run centre.
